BELLERBY, near Leyburn, aims to make its 2015 scarecrow trail bigger than ever before by holding a scarecrow school.

Residents were invited to a free workshop in the memorial hall, where expert scarecrow-makers Elaine Sayer and Lyn Matheson shared their secrets to over 20 willing pupils. They tore and pasted all afternoon, putting together some impressive looking papiermache heads and realistic bodies. Several animals were also made, including a dog and a moose.

Afterwards the creative group admired their work over a cup of tea and a bun.

Organiser Ms Matheson said: “The scarecrow trail is always enjoyed by visitors. We aim to inspire more scarecrow makers to make the open gardens and trail even more fun.”

The Bellerby open gardens and scarecrow trail is on Sunday, July 12. This year, in addition to jazz, refreshments and plant sales, organisers plan to hold a vide-grenier.

In what is possibly a first for the area, they are a French idea whereby residents empty their attics and sell the results outside their homes.
