SUPPORTERS of a far-right group marched through the streets of a North-east town yesterday (SATURDAY) in a planned demonstration.
About 150 supporters of the North East Infidels, formerly the North East English Defence League, held a protest in Stockton, starting out at the Green Dragon pub before marching down the High Street and on to Church Road, where they held a rally.
A counter-demonstration by anti-fascist group the Teesside Solidarity Movement attracted a few dozen people on the High Street, close to the fountains.
There was a heavy police presence in the town, which was also hosting Stockton Pirate Festival and a vintage market, and officers aimed to stop protestors from rival camps from coming into contact.
Cleveland Police declined to comment on the march today, and would not say whether there were any arrests, following unconfirmed reports there had been a fight in the Green Dragon pub following the demonstration between two members of far-right groups.
The march itself, and the counter-demonstration, passed off peacefully, with no major incidents.
