BUSINESSES in Stockton town centre have voted in favour of trying to establish the town as a special business area.

The businesses are proposing to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) which means they will work with Stockton Borough Council on activities to bring more shoppers and business to the town centre.

The news, announced today,FRI has been welcomed by Leader of Stockton Borough Council, Bob Cook, who argued the businesses were also buying into the council’s investment into restoring The Globe theatre and a new hotel in the centre.

He said: “By voting in favour of a BID, businesses have not only given a ringing endorsement of our vision for Stockton town centre, they have literally bought into it themselves.

Trading conditions remain tough but with town centre businesses on board these challenges can be identified and overcome. The BID will put power in their hands to join forces and, with the support of the council, drive forward all kinds of activities aimed at boosting trade and attracting visitors and shoppers.”
