A LOCAL authority has joined forces with community pharmacies to provide a disposal service for sharps boxes.
The NHS used to supply the service but due to cut backs late last year had to stop.
As a waste collection authority, Hambleton has to collect and dispose of clinical waste including needles and therefore has set up the new service.
“This is a great service to offer to our patients,” said John Evans at Coopers Chemists in Great Ayton - one of 10 now signed up for the scheme.
“We now can issue our patients with a sharps disposal boxes via a prescription and they can return it to us when it is full.”
Council leader Mark Robson said: “This service best ensures safety for all whilst also minimising inconvenience to patients.”
