Artists added a splash of colour when the East Cleveland Classic Cycle Race sped through Guisborough on Sunday, April 16.

The View From the Handlebars – a roadside banner more than seven metres long – showed off the area's scenery, flora and fauna.

Charity Guisborough Arts brought together artists, photographers and graphic designer Darren Smith to create the art work, which intertwined the work of artists Maria Haley, Ian Nicholas, Wendy Goupillot, Barbara Dobby and Catherine Little, plus photographers Michael Smith and Peter Neasham.

Now Guisborough Arts plans to use the work with schools to bring more arts participation into residential homes.

Spokesperson Bernard Clarke said: “Viewing art and doing art has been shown to improve your health and your mood. By promoting our local arts scene we can become an arts town with a thriving creative economy, careers for our gifted young people, and a centre where everyone can get creative and enjoy spectacular shows and exhibitions.”

Guisborough Arts, the Tees Valley Community Foundation, Redcar and Cleveland Council, and the East Cleveland Classic Cycle Race all collaborated on the scheme.

The charity’s summer project is the Guisborough Giant, a trail of giant art works through the town centre, with a carnival day and picnic at which the giant will appear in person on Saturday, August 17.
