The search is on for a MayFest queen and king and their retinue to highlight the history and customs of May Day.
Children aged from five to 16 are invited to dress in their finest as queen, king, jack-in-the-green, royal jester, page, flower girl or other member of the royal court for the Richmond festival.
Costumes can be made at home or with the MayFest Makers at Richmondshire Museum from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5. All are welcome, but youngsters should be accompanied by an adult.
On the following day, Monday, May 6, participants should register at Richmond Town Hall from 10.30am ready to join the procession, wearing their costumes.
At 11am the parade will set off from the Town Hall to Richmond Castle, led by the Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band - and Tom Fool.
Competition winners will be announced at the castle at 12pm.
This year’s four-day MayFest programme has a packed line-up of performers and for children, as well as the crafts and parade, there is maypole dancing, Punch and Judy, the Silly History Boys, Dawn of Chivalry living history group, circus skills, and face painting. There are also markets with craft and plant stalls.
All events taking place in Richmond Castle are free for residents in DL9, DL10 and DL11 courtesy of English Heritage and there is free music and dance around the town, including the MayFest Mini Folk Fest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the Town Hall.
