Prince William and Rishi Sunak have been among those to congratulate the England Football Team after the Lionesses defeated Australia to reach the final of the 2023 FIFA Women's Football World Cup.

Goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo saw the Lionesses beat hosts Australia 3-1 in their semi-final in Sydney on Wednesday (August 16) to reach their first-ever World Cup final. 

England will now face Spain in the World Cup Final on Sunday (August 20).

Prince William leads cheers for Lionesses after semi-final win

Prince William led congratulatory messages for the Lionesses after their semi-final win over Australia on Wednesday.

The Prince of Wales sent his congratulations to the England team after the game in a personally signed tweet, saying: "What a phenomenal performance from the Lionesses – on to the final!

“Commiserations to the Matildas, you’ve played brilliantly and been fantastic co-hosts of this World Cup."

Former England striker and presenter Gary Lineker, Rishi Sunak and supporters across the country also heaped praise on the Lionesses after the game.

Lineker tweeted saying: “Well played Lionesses. Absolutely superb performance.

“A World Cup final. A World Cup final at football. It’s been a while. What a wonderful achievement.”

While UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, also on Twitter (X), said: “What a performance Lionesses.

“Just one more game to go… Bring on Sunday.”

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer will represent the Government at the final, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said.

England cricket fans took great delight in the Lionesses getting one over the Aussies, with the Barmy Army tweeting: “Oh bye bye Aussies, bye bye".

The final of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 will take place at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Sunday, August 20.
