NORTHALLERTON DMC struck lucky weather wise for their trial on Sunday at Chequers high above the village of Osmotherley, Clerk of Course Nigel Rooksby finally giving the go-ahead after a rapid thaw took place the day before.

This fantastic piece of land always draws a top-class entry of experts and the in form teenager Dan Peace from Kirkbymoorside snatched the expert win on most cleans rule from the experienced Ian Austermuhle from Malton. Peace lost a couple of marks on the very first river section where Austy remained clean, but the youngsters string of unpenalised rides over the extremely difficult rocky gullies of sections eight to 15 could not be matched and duly earned him a close and hard fought victory.

Ride of the day came from Danby's Ian Hopley who topped a strong Intermediate class to win by three marks. Hopley, not riding regularly over this past year put in a fantastic ride to remain unpenalised on the rocks of 14, where second place man Great Edstone rider John Benton lost eight and Pickering's Dave Wardell is proving almost unbeatable at present in Clubman B class with a five mark clear win over Zac Hubsay from Consett.

IT WAS business as usual for Colin Ward last Sunday, when he took the Expert Class win in the Stanley Club Trial, held at short notice at Butsfield Quarry, after the Castleside Club were forced to cancel their own trial when snow blocked the access road to Rogerly Quarry. Ward's seven marks put him ten clear of Jamie Stephenson. Louis Grey is on form on the Green Course at the moment and took another win ahead of Travis Ward and Eddie Aitkin, while on a tricky Clubman route it was Trevor Newton who triumphed over A class riders Matty Napper and William Dalton. Brian Johnson took the Easy course win on nine, after runner-up Gary Daykin had a disaster on section one, losing ten marks here as the winner went clean.

PHIL DISNEY'S new training paid regime paid handsome dividends on Sunday at remote Keighley Gate where arctic conditions failed to deter 137 competitors.

Disney embarked on his get-fit training schedule before Christmas and it certainly showed on Sunday when he won the championship class by a country mile. Even top rated Richard Sadler was shocked with the low score of the Cross Roads Appleyard Future Montesa rider. Event Secretary Sue Smith was also surprised by the entry numbers.

Toby Martyn and his father Tim 'dropped in' from Truro, Tom Minta from Telford, Lewis Hurdsman from North Wales and the entire Alford family from Navenby. For Master Martyn it was a brilliant weekend and a result he could dream about. Second overall to the mighty Disney, just a single mark in arrears. Martyn was on a two day visit just to check out Yorkshire trials.

The Clubman A course was no picnic as it was all stream orientated but Andrew Jackson was in the right mood to attack every section ironically tracked the other Martyn – Tim, who seemed to be quite happy paddling in Yorkshire ice cold aquatic sections.

The Mirfield shoe repairer, also talented at rebuilding camping stools, cleaned a dozen sections on all three laps and stopped once, in section twelve in the windswept east ravine.

Top Youth William Tolson kept Falcon's points tally moving with a fine tenth place in the class as well as nailing the youth victory. Mark Chippendale won Clubman B from Mark Timperley despite the handicap of keeping an eye on the other Musketeers Chris Manby and Mark Forster. Buxton's Harry Turner just edged out Elliott Laws and Henry Stephenson on the hard course. All rode Class C while national championship Josh McParland rode Class D:

Wrexham's Lewis Hurdsman held George Hemingway to a tie-breaker which ran in favour of Little Hemmo on farthest clean. Ten contested Class while Olivia Brooksbank won Class C from Bradley Green. The Club ran the Improvers course section and nine youngster rode a milder course which went to blonde charger Imogen Laws from Joel Hazlett and a toothy Poppy Fletcher who is now six years old and going through the baby tooth loss.
