A REAL old-fashioned trial ran on Sunday in Coverdale, where 99 riders assembled for Darlington Motor Club’s charity trial.

Some big names from various centres headed for Braidley, including Paul Lonergan, who brought his Gas Gas from Colchester to sample the splendid two-lap, 25-section course that ran right across the River Cover and way out onto the east moors.

Some sections were used as early as the Gerald Simpson British sidecar championship trials. Fourteen sections were out on the lofty moors, with seven nestling below the Lambert farmstead. The course crossed the main road through the villages twice, after section 19 at Lambert's and after the last two sections at Braidley.

THE Weardale team found some new sections for the North East Centre Championship Trial last weekend. This went down well with the 62 starters, who were well-tested with some tricky sections around Harthope, above St John's Chapel, in the Wear Valley.

In a high-scoring event, James Black and Dale Whittaker were the front-runners on the expert course and Black came out on top with a total of 33 marks dropped, three less than runner-up Whittaker, who pushed Alistair Dalton into third place on 43.
