LEYBURN joiner Richard Sadler added the GE Brown & Son Trophy to his mounting collection when he rode his Beta UK machine to victory in a mist-shrouded Richmond Motor Club trial at remote Gunnerside on Sunday.

Sadler won the White Rose Trophy seven days before the all-star event in Swaledale.

Shropshire youth Tom Minta and Ashby de la Zouch MRS Sherco rider Luke Walker piled on the pressure, as did Dan Thorpe and Scott Trial winner Jonathan Richardson.

The 122 riders faced cool conditions on the bleak, but scenic, moors. Some sections were high on the fells, so high that an air ambulance helicopter flew below the altitude of the third section.

Sadler topped the championship course, while Gary Thwaite and Paul Sadler won their respective clubman categories.

WOMBLETON'S Shane Monkman gained a confidence-boosting win at Thirsk and District MC's trial on Sunday, pipping Scarborough's Gary Collinson by just one penalty.

Clerk of course Nigel Todd flagged a testing four-lap, ten-section course at Low Kilburn Grange, Kilburn, observed the eighth section and calculated the results with his partner, Ruth Hindmarch.

Only two hazards really troubled the experts – the fourth and the eighth, a jumble of slippery rocks under the old quarry face which had riders having to flick the bike over an angled rock into a tight hairpin and climb a greasy slab before dropping down to exit. Monkman and Frost were best.

In Class A, clubman Barrie Darrell proved too consistent over the first four sections for Mark Franklin, a tennis coach from Danby who only rides the occasional trial nowadays.

Clubman B riders had an easy ride through sections. Stokesley's Mark Hardy got his Beta round for just one penalty. Fellow Beta rider Mark Jewell and Yarm's Brian Johnson could not match Hardy's consistency, Jewell suffering an attack of the dabs on sections two, five, eight and nine and Johnson going for six lost on section two.

Results. – Experts: 1 Shane Monkman (Gas Gas) 30; 2 Gary Collinson (Gas Gas) 31; 3 Jonathon Frost (Gas Gas) 33. ROUND five of the Weardale and District MC Saturday afternoon series went off at Eastgate, where sections turned out harder than anticipated, with heavy rain playing a big part in proceedings.

Gareth Martin had a resounding win on the clubman route, with just 17 marks lost. Richard Hawes was his nearest challenger on 44, followed by Matthew Ball on 54.

Connor Peart was in equally good form, taking the easy course win on 25, again well clear of the competition, while Gordon Dundee took the very easy course win on 118.
