DOUGIE Lampkin, whose father Martin died less than a month before the Scottish Six Days Trial after a year-long battle against cancer, fought his grief to win the international event for a record 10th time.

His father had won the Scottish trial on three occasions, as well as the Scott Trial four times.

Michael Brown climbed back into the action after almost a year out with a serious knee injury to head James Dabill, making it a trio of Yorkshire riders in the top three positions.

Lampkin, now 40, was nine penalties ahead of Brown and 15 up on British champion Dabill.

Ben Hemingway, Jonathan Richardson, Guy Kendrew and James Stones finished 11th to 15th. In 24th place was Andy Chilton, who held off Tom Hick, Dan Hemingway, Rob Waite, Dan Peace and Jack Stones.

THE Guisborough and District Motor Club again had to fall back to the trusty old shale tips at Charltons to run their second club trial as the land at Low Gillbeck Farm proved too wet.

With clerk of course Gary Ferguson in charge of the section flags, local rider Jonathon Taylor came out of retirement to edge the expert win by two marks from Karl Dodderidge.

The latter posted the best score on the hardest section of the night, losing just three marks here compared to Taylor on five and David Bell on seven, but lost marks on the later sections, where Taylor stayed penalty-free.

Jack Doble dominated the intermediate class and Whitby's Mike Noble made sure of clubman A laurels with the only unpenalised ride of the night on section three. Runner-up Adrian Harrison never fathomed this one to lose nine.

The joint winners of clubman B, Ron Chapman and Andrew Dale, could not be split. They lost one on the first section and then suffered a nerve-jangling night, but both hung on to clean everything else, with Paul Nelson third after one dropped on the third.

With George McGee at the Scottish Six Days Trial, it was left to the Arbon family to organise the growing numbers in the youth conducted classes.

ECCLESHILL teenager Keiran Child won the annual John Bolton novice and youth trial at Skyrakes Farm, Skipton, last Sunday from Richard Mellon and Huddersfield over-40s contender Andrew Jackson.

The 15-year-old Beta rider rode through 42 sections, losing just two penalties, as 41 riders competed on the hard course, plus Yorkshire champion Phil Disney, who was ineligible as he is expert-ranked.

Harrogate timber merchant Rob Hardisty managed to beat his riding partner Phillip Hammond for third-placed over-40 finisher by two penalties. The Summerbridge Sherco rider will aim to turn the tables at the opening Crooks Trophy championship trial at Dacre tomorrow afternoon.

Danielle Whitham was playing out on her Jotagas and took little sister Gabby to the cleaners by 11 marks.

Richmond boys Tim Weatherill and Jack Dent turned in good results, the latter winning class C youth and the former runner-up in class B.

THE major trial on Sunday is the annual Gerald Simpson Memorial Trial, run by Richmond Motor Club at Carlton, where Richard Sadler will take on Guy Kendrew and James Stones.

More than 100 competitors will ride a 40-section trials course in Coverdale, where farmer Steve Lambert has marked a testing route.

Robyn Alderson and Hannah Richardson will aim to beat some of the men, as they usually do, while Brendan Suffell and Paul Terry will resume their weekly joust on two wheels.
