Wetherby Motor Club, National Wainwright Shield Trial, Marsett, Sunday.

LEYBURN joiner Richard Sadler won the National Wainwright Shield Trial last Sunday from James Stones and Danny Gamble.

Only 15 expert riders completed the testing moorland course high above Marsett despite good weather.

The clubman class was won by Norton gas rig technician Roger Williams from Masham Sausages company director Paul Dennis, followed by Nene Valley contender Steve Swanson and Ben Rhydding heating engineer Andy Tales. The latter two riders were separated by a tie-break.

The Wetherby Motor Club followed the traditional Wainwright format with two long laps of moorland and 24 sections masterminded by Patrick Darbyshire, his assistant Jonny Greenwood and young Max Harker.

The first nine sections tracked Oughtershaw Gill and the opener dropped down to the stream, taking in a couple of mild climbs. Sam Beecroft-Penny stopped here and only Sadler, winner last year on 14, remained without penalty through the entire west end sections, but he did mutter at dropping a boot on the dry, rocky stream bed at the 10th section.

At that point, Stones was on three and Gamble up to four, as was Thomas Housecroft. That came up after the 11th section, which was a real tester.

The second loop took in Huntershaw Gill and New Close. Sadler dabbed 16 and then had to take three on lap two, but cleaned the last two in style. The difficult final climb, with its sharp right turn at the top, tested all but Sadler, Sam Yeadon, Gamble and Roger Williams.

RIPON Motor Club went ton up last Saturday at West Hill Edge, Galphay Moor, where 106 contenders arrived to ride the fourth Acklams Beta-sponsored club championship.

Keith Blythe and his team of Mark and James Langstaff and Peter Fleetham plotted a 10-section, four-lap trial in the Hill Edge jungle, which did not quite go as planned. The reversal of the route unearthed some unforeseen hazards which went towards making the sections harder than usual.

Scores were up slightly, but experienced riders such as Richard Thorpe and Norman Shepherd got round on decent scores.

Peter Brown won the novice class, while Bradley Green just headed the youth easy class by a dab from Callum Benson and Jason Brown.

Sixteen small wheelers rode a five-section, five-lap event which went to Charlie Astwood, Ashley Watson and Lucy Ayrton, who won her class for the second time in four days.

Ripon run again at Galloway Pastures, Greenhow, on July 16, with a 3pm and 5pm start time.

THERE was a healthy entry of 65 riders for the Castleside Club's trial at Rogerley Quarry, Frosterley, last Sunday.

They had three courses to choose from, plus a conducted course for the youngsters.

Michael Phillipson and John Crinson went head to head again on the expert route, while Carl Shaw was in a class of his own on the clubman route, his total of 15 putting him well clear of Martin Phillipson and Colin Gelston.

On the easy course, Gary Daykin took the honours after losing four single marks, beating Brian Ridley.
